I am the proud second owner of a 2007 Sonata 2.4L which has been an amazing car. I purchased the vehicle from a Lexus dealership in Maryland at 40,000 miles and it has run flawlessly until recently. When I reached 61,000 miles, I took it to the dealership for the 60,000-mile service at Alexandria Hyundai and was confident I would reach beyond 100,000 miles easily.
Last Friday, Virginia experienced a heat advisory in the upper 90’s. I know from someone who has lived in Vegas and Arizona this is nothing. My brother needed to have a surgery done so I commuted into Maryland. It was hot so the AC was on max. Once the procedure was done, I dropped my brother off and headed back into Virginia. On the way home I was caught up in rush hour traffic, and at 64,000 miles the engine started knocking loudly. I pulled over immediately and got the car towed home. Once I got home I checked my oil, the oil stick was bone dry. I added oil and the knock was still very loud and did not go away. I first assumed it was the lifters, but this appears to be the crankshaft or I threw a rod.
I googled Hyundai’s powertrain warranty and it appears that getting the dealer to replace the engine is very dismal. I’ve reached out to Alexandria Hyundai who has been the best dealer ever for me, but recently I put in a request online to schedule an appointment and selected the option to call me first so I could schedule towing. No response. Called one of the service managers and left a voicemail. As of July 19th no response. Called another service manager who is usually responsive on the 20th and still no answer. Since there are three service managers, on Monday I decided to call the third one and no response.
Sorry for the wall of text, does anyone know a good sources for 2.4L engines. I’ve checked Ebay and other sites on google but those engines are high milage. I figure I am going to have to come out of pocket for this. I am going to have the car towed soon to get checked out to find out exactly what the problem is.
Thank you,
