2005 X350 radio and climate control lights too dim

This is my 3rd XG350 and the only one who's radio lights and climate control display don't get brighter when the headlights are turned off. I'm wondering if this is a 2005 "feature" or if something is wrong. The climate control display is so dim its hard to read during sunny days (no problem at all at night). Could someone with a 2005 let me know if these display lights dim / brighten as the headlights are turned on / off?
