Had my 1997 Sonata 2.0 Gls over at my mechanic for two days. My car was running really smooth and well, however I was approaching the mileage interval to replace the timing belt and water pump. In order to PREVENT future problems like bending the valves in my engine, I had him replace the timing belt and water pump.
When I first got it back, it idled really rough, sometimes shaking the steering wheel. Mechanic adjusted a valve at the top of the engine and slightly increased the idle to make it more smooth. However this turned out to be a temporary solution. When I start my car when it's cold I can hear loud clunky noises from the cam cover. I told the mechanic about this yet he insists there is nothing wrong and that this is normal.
Apparently since its a new belt and it is on pretty tight, I should drive the car for a few days and the belt will "settle in" and the car won't be noisy anymore. He's been servicing my car for a while and replaced my belt back in 2006 so I trusted him to do the job. However I am having serious doubts here especially after reading about so many others who had similar bad experiences.
My mileage is high (275 800km) but I always babied my engine....should I get a second opinion or drive the car for a few days a see how it goes? I'm thinking I may as well get a used engine for replacement later this year. I know its an old car and most people wouldn't spend so much on it however it has great sentimental value to me ;-)
Any input or advice will be appreciated
