I am Steampunk, AKA JJ, and have been obsessed with cars since I was about 3 years old. Can't get enough. I love foreign cars, but one of my favourites is Grand Caravans and derivatives from 1992-1995. Love 'em.
I just sent the most recent one to the Great Recycling Yard in the Sky, in order to make room for a 2009 Hyundai Accent. I am a real Toyota FREAK but I have not liked what I have been seeing coming out of Toyota City for the last few years. Indeed, I have a 2005 Scion tC with 66,665 miles on it, and the quality is nowhere near the '85 Corolla GTS (Hachiroku) I just sold to a kid that wants to rebuild it. Good luck, you have your work cut out for you with the body. So I decided to try a Hyundai. All my friends that have them love them.
It was quite by serendipity that I came to buy the Hyundai. I went to a local Honda dealer to look at a 2003 Civic with 146,000 miles for ~$4,500, but needless to say, it was gone. THey showed me a CRV from Vermont that would have been nice, but the suspension components showed some heavy rust. I drive ~28,000 miles a year in my job, but split it between a Mazda 626, the Scion and whatever else I happen to have hanging around at the time.
Talking to the salesperson, I told her "The problem is that people want power windows, power door locks, AC, Bluetooth, etc, so the prices of cars is way out of line now! I just really like basic transportation, not too many bells and whistles, just a good car." Her eyes light up and she says, "have I got the car for you!"
The things I like about it are its simplicity, and that it is reminiscient of the Corollas from the 80's: nice, simple car. It does have the upgraded stereo with XM, which I rely on daily, so no XM receiver hanging from the dash! Sound is ok. Operation of the car is good, too: easy steering, easy to manoever, nice shift points (for the first time in my life I specifically bought an AT). Just a nice car.
I have said for a while that I think my next car might be a Hyundai. Here I am.
I live in Western Mass and am the Dell Factory Service Rep for 2 counties in Western Mass, but also occasionally make trips to the Keene NH and Brattleboro VT areas. Reliable transportation is a must! Here's hoping! :D
