Late last year I bought an '05 Manual 1.3L Getz. All was fine for a couple of weeks and then it started to get harder to shift. Sometimes it would stick in a gear or not go in at all, but it was intermittent. This would more often than not happen in reverse or going from first to second rather than higher gears.
Took it to a couple of local workshops who said there was nothing wrong with it. So one morning when it was particularly bad I took it back so they could see for themselves. They cleaned out the hydraulics/changed fluid and all was well - for about two weeks!
Over the next few months it got worse, but as it never happened any time I took it to a workshop, the response was always the same - it's fine.
As the change of fluid helped for a short while I thought the problem must be hydraulic. However, it is an old, high mileage car and it still had the original clutch, so I asked for a quote to change it. They were insistent there was no problem with the clutch or the cylinder.
It started to happen more frequently and in higher gears too. Finally I had enough and told them to change the clutch. All was good, but two days later it started to do it again.
It is much, much better, but not quite right. Now it only happens occasionally and only at lower speeds so far. For example, sometimes at lights it wont go into first and I have to turn the engine off and start it in first to get moving.
Any ideas? Does this sound like a hydraulic problem or is it the gearbox?
