First Road Trip

Though I have had my 2014 Azera for two months now, I only recently got the opportunity for a road trip. It was only a 150-mile drive each way, but it did give me the opportunity to see how it handled on the expressway and see what kind of gas mileage it would get. At first I found the electronic power steering not as tight on-center as I have been used to with hydraulic power steering, but after the first hour or so I got used to the different feel and didn't give it much thought. For the first 150 miles, I registered an overall average of 30.5 MPG. The return trip had about 20 miles of slow-and-go traffic, so that dropped the overall average for the trip to 28.6 MPG. According to the Blue Link Eco readout, some of my "prior 2.5 minute" periods registered over 35 MPG. In fact, I have seen 32 MPG when driving in town at 35 MPH. It is the stops that kill MPG in town. My in-town mileage has averaged 20 MPG, so the car is getting pretty close to the expected EPA mileage of 19/29.

The XM Traffic did warn of the upcoming rush hour traffic, but it did not offer any feasible detours. I did travel a large section of Interstate at full speed despite the XM Traffic showing the road as having very slow traffic. So, it seems the XM Traffic information is not that accurate or up to date. I have found the same thing in town. I doubt I will pay for the XM Traffic service when the trial expires.

Though I am not a fan of the 2D map display, the actual navigation directions were pretty good. I did like that it handled a destination that was off the map road (down a long driveway road). When we got to the driveway road it showed a dotted line to the destination and said to follow the screen. One thing I don't like about the navigation is sometimes when you are still a block away from your destination, it says you have reached your destination, stops the navigation, and zooms the map out. I like my GPS tablet App that shows your progress in detail right up the exact destination. That makes it easier to find the exact address you are looking for.

This trip had its fair share of love bugs and the whole front of the car was covered in them. Because I have a polymer sealant on the paint and grille, all it took was a wet terry-cloth wash cloth and light scrubbing to get them off. No soap, just plain water.
