I own and my son mostly drives a 2011 Limited which I purchased off of eBay and is approaching 60k miles at which point the new car warranty will expire. Since it was pre-owned but not a CPO sale, the car will be completely out of warranty at that point, i.e. no 10 yr./100k power train warranty.
Let me note here that this Sonata has been one of the most reliable, trouble-free cars I have ever driven, and I have owned numerous vehicles. Driving and handling is excellent, no steering problems, no strange rattles or clicking, no excessive road noise, the interior has held up well, all electronics, Nav/radio/bluetooth...no complaints. A brake light switch replacement and a new battery are the sum total of "issues" needed to be addressed. But I'm well aware that at 60k my good fortune could suddenly cease and I could possibly be faced with devastating mechanical failures or perhaps a series of smaller problems which cumulatively could prove very costly.
The car is fully paid for, and ideally I would like to keep it for another 30-40k miles before selling or trading, but I'm concerned about the potential for expensive repairs in the future with no warranty coverage to defray the cost.
I briefly checked online and Hyundai offers a variety of factory-backed EWs that are transferable and cancelable which appear at first blush to provide fairly broad coverage. [Of course I haven't seen the small print yet.] A typical price for an additional 5 yrs. and app. 40k additional miles (to 100,000) is around $2600. A preliminary dealer inspection report is also a requirement.
There have been other extended warranty threads and I know that many are adamantly opposed to them. I have been opposed as well in the past. But now I'm wavering. So, I'm soliciting off-the-cuff opinions. What say you...thumbs up or thumbs down?
