How to take off floor mat hooks?

I recently purchased some WeatherTech universal floor mats (on sale for $34.99!). The Accent floor mat hooks don't align with the WeatherTech hook receiver holes, so I want to take the stock ones out. I've pulled and twisted and I'd prefer not to cut my floor liner. Is there any reasonably easy way to remove them?
