I always like to know how things work and I had asked the sales rep at my Hyundai dealer how the AWD works on the 2014 SFS. He could not answer. I researched it further and found that most car manufacturers don't like to give away their trade secrets. I know know that the SFS may have a computer controlled multi-plate clutch near the rear differential, therefore it is a on-demand AWD that will cut out if you exceed 40 kph. Some AWD's have a viscous coupling instead of the mult-plate clutch. We just had another 8" of new snow last night so I was anxious to try the AWD on my SFS. I am very impressed. I purposely put the front wheels in a snow pile and stopped the car. The wheels did not slip as they should have. The AWD kicked in and the drive train split to 50/50, front and back. I climbed right out of the drift. It is not a 4WD but I am very very impressed.
I know you can lock the AWD "on" when required ( up to 40 KPH max) but I also heard you can shut it off to save on fuel economy when the road conditions are ideal.
Has anyone else heard this ?
