Tune-Up Time!!

When I started dating my now wife, her Santa Fe had low 60k miles on it, this was...6-7 years ago. (No one tell her I have no idea when we started dating), it started leaking and she took it to the dealer for some work. I was led to believe she always took it to the dealer at the scheduled intervals. We decided I would take over the maintenance around 90k, so just oil changes and tire rotations.

We recently had it back to the dealer and they advised to do a tune-up (spark plugs & wires), rear diff, transfer case, tranny drain & fill, rear rotors & pads, front rotors and pads amongst some other stuff.

I declined all this, when I asked my wife why this stuff is coming up, she told me that she had the rear diff and transmission serviced once before, nothing else. *smacks head*

Needless to say, I put a rush on many of the items as we're now at 107k.

Last night I replaced the stock spark plugs and wires, the wires were in decent shape, but new ones for that peace of mind are worth it in themselves! The front bank of plugs nearly had no electrode, the backs were alright...not as bad as the front, for sure. Overall, the job wasn't hard...just annoying and time consuming. Next time I do it I'm going to put studs in the plenum where the throttle bracket is, I swear I spent the most time trying to line up the throttle bracket and vaccum canister (I think?) and bolted to the plenum.

Then I had to take it off to get to a bolt to put a vacuum line onto where it should be bracketed. It's kind of funny, I only broke one clip and put everything back exactly how it was. If it were my vehicle, I'd have broken everything and left brackets hanging loosely....and spent 1/4 of the time I did on everything. I digress...

Anyways, truck idles so smoothly that even my wife noticed a difference. I also cleaned the throttle body so it wasn't sticky anymore, she's still adjusting to that change. lol

The rear diff service wasn't hard at all (especially not the dealer price of 110 + tax), fill and drain plug are easy to get to, I did drop the spare tire to have more room to put fluid back in.

Transfer case was a bit trickier, due to fill location, tried to use a mechanics syringe but ended getting gear oil all over the place. Ended up using a gravity feed while I was draining the ATF.

Tranny was also pretty simple, remove shield (8 12mm bolts), drop plug, let drain, party hard, install drain plug (surprised by the amount of metal gunk, looked like the T1000 was in there) and filled up what I took out. Measured after rowing through gears and getting up to temp and added a little more. Accidentally removed funnel before fluid got all the way down and spilt it, so there's a little drip of tranny fluid here and there.

Next week is a brake overhaul, not looking forward to trying to remove rotor retaining screws that have 110k and 10 years of Indiana winters on them. Haha.

I also troubleshot the horn issues, think I've got it pretty narrowed down. I'll update that post on that thread. :)

Just wanted to say how happy I am with this vehicle with the exception of the silly intake plenum, maintenance is pretty pain-free! This truck has given us 90k (bought used around 20k) of pretty much problem free mileage, and has very little rust. Looking forward to the next 100k!!! Also, planning to break 300k. Wish me luck. Haha.
