2004 2.4L standard Santa Fe. I've noticed over the last several morning that when the vehicle cranks to start it starts REALLY rough. This morning I swear I could hear the pistons going up and down almost scraping for the first few seconds, but it probably wasn't as bad as it seemed.
I'm currently on my second round of Mobil 1 sysnthetic 5W30 with a genuine Hyundai oil filter. Prior to this I was using dino oil, also with the genuine Hyundai oil filter. After the first change to Mobil 1 I ran it for 10,000K (previously was changing at 5,00K with the dino oil) No problem on the first change, and as of today I was 7,500km into the second change with Mobil 1.
It almost sounded like the engine wasn't getting enough lubrication as it started, almost a knocking sound, but not a knocking as I've heard real knocking before, but the engine was loud and just rough sounding. Once it warmed up it was fine but this lasted for the first 5 minutes or so.
So after pondering this for a few days I wondered if it was perhaps a clogged oil filter or something. So I changed out the oil and filter today, replaced with Mobil 1 synthetic again and a genuine Hyundai failter. Although the motor was somewhat cooled down by the time I finished it started up right away and sounded a MILLION TIMES BETTER. I let it sit for a few hours while I worked on another vehicle and then fired it up again to move it, and again, it sounded just fine. I did notice maybe a dozen or so small flecks in the bottom of the used oil pan when I was draining it to recycle it. Hadn't seen that before. When I touched them with my fingers I could barely feel them and they seemed to almost disolve so not sure if it was metal shavings or not, but maybe 12- 24 in total and just very small flecks maybe a double the size of a grain of salt.
Then I started to wonder if perhaps there may be a failing oil pump issue going on? I searched the forums and there's very little mention of oil pumps so not sure if I'm barking up the wrong tree or not. It's been coldish her the last few weeks...around -1 to -7C.
I've also noticed a sporadic bit of squeeling from one of the belts in the early morning start ups which goes away usually after a minute or so. I'm going to have it in to get the belts checked, but thought I'd mention this. I suspect it's the AC belt or something...and not even sure if the oil pump is even driven off a belt.
Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be helpful.
I'll report back tomorrow on how tomorrow's 4am start goes with the new oil and filter after it's sat in 0 degress weather all night.
Thanks!
