We're about to buy a car in Florida with 50,000 miles on it. The little old lady it belonged to has passed away, and the brother in another town just wants to get rid of it for $500. He says it looks good. We haven't seen it yet, but we'll go there tomorrow. I know to check transmission fluid for darkness (a no no, right?) and make sure the oil level is OK. We'll drive it to a place that's open on Sundays, a Firestone, and they said they could check it out for $20. They won't check any more than probably what they'd check for free if you got an oil change (which we may have them do if the oil doesn't look fresh). We'll drive it back 300 miles if everything looks OK to drive it.
I've copied down a bunch of this forum's posts so that we'll be more informed as to what can go wrong with these puppies. Any other advice would be appreciated.
